FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

How does the encryption actually work?

When you set your PIN, your device turns it into an encryption key. That key locks your notes before they leave your browser. The server only ever sees the locked version — we never see what you wrote. Full technical details are on the security page.

What if I forget my PIN?

During onboarding you get 10 single-use recovery codes. Any one of them can unlock your notes and let you set a new PIN. Store them somewhere safe — a password manager, printed paper, hardware key. We cannot reset your PIN for you.

Is there a Mac or iPhone app?

Not yet — Mac and iPhone apps are planned. Right now Dim Notes runs as a web app (any browser), as Windows and Linux desktop apps, and an Android app is coming soon. The web app works on mobile browsers in the meantime.

Will you ever add AI features?

Never in the cloud. The encryption model makes it technically impossible to process your notes server-side. But even if we could, we wouldn't. Any AI features, like voice dictation, always run locally on your device, so your notes stay private.

Is Dim Notes open source?

Not currently. The cryptographic primitives used (Web Crypto API, @noble/hashes) are open and auditable. The security page documents the full architecture.

Who's behind Dim Notes?

Dim Notes LLC. No VC funding, no growth team, no ad business. Dim Notes is built to be a useful, private tool — not a platform. Read more on the about page.
